20.00 - 23.00 | Welcome Cocktail Reception at Zappeion The Zappeion is not simply an impressive building surrounded by lovely gardens, but also a visition that was conceived by Constantine Zappas and Evangelos Zappas. The Zappas brothers firmly believed that the newly independent Greek nation needed to take its place among the nations of Europe. In 1869, the Greek Parliament allocated 80,000 m² of public land between the Palace Gardens and the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus, and also passed a law on November 30, 1869, “for the building works of the Olympic Games”, as the Zappeion was the first building to be erected specifically for the revival of the Olympic Games in the modern world. For its construction, the privileges of Greece were emphasized: the clear sky of Attica, the Mediterranean light, the columns with Ionian capitals, the colours of frescoes and circular patio just like the elegant houses of ancient Greece, the colonnades of the entrance which imitates the propylies of temples dedicated to the gods of Olympus. Recently, the Zappeion Exhibition Hall became a member of Historic Conference Centres of Europe. Dress code: Casual Bus departures at 19.15 from the Conference Venue and at 19.30 from Karaiskaki Square in front of Stanley hotel. |
