Ray Lei Zhao

Mr. Ray Zhao joined Unitalen in 2002 and has been engaged in trademark confirmation and authorization and trademark rights protection service since then.

As a senior partner of Unitalen Attorneys at Law, Mr. Zhao was the head of the legal team and now is the director of the international trademark department. He has accumulated extensive practical experience in trademark prosecution and IP enforcement. He personally handled and instructed other lawyers and agents to handle a large number of intellectual property cases, through which he has accumulated in-depth theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience. Ray is good at settling trademark dispute and trademark infringement by the way of administrative proceeding and judicial process, and has successfully solved many complicated litigation and non-litigation cases.
Mr. Zhao has handled a series of cases involving intellectual property confirmation and infringement for many multinational corporations at home and abroad, which includes but not limited to Dr. Martens (Germany), McCain (Canada), Icon (U.S.), FMTM (Switzerland), VISA (U.S.), Ferrari (Italy), China Mobile (China) and China Re (China). In the meantime, he takes the post of legal consultant providing advice on IP strategy and IP infringement issues for many listed companies.

A number of cases represented by Mr. Zhao have been selected as the top ten intellectual property cases of the year by different provincial higher people’s courts. In view of his outstanding performance in handling complex and difficult litigation and non-litigation cases in the field of intellectual property, he has been awarded as Leading Trademark Practitioners in China by WTR for many times.

Mr. Zhao is actively engaged in trademark theory and practice research and has published many articles in influential IP magazines and newspapers, such as World IP review (WIPR), World Trademark Review (WTR), ECTA Daily, Trademark Lawyer, Asia IP, IP Pro, China Intellectual Property News, China Industry & Commerce News, China Trademark, Intellectual Property Pioneer Online Magazine and China Invention & Patent. He also participated in the compilation of the "Trademark and Patent Agency" which is the sub-volume of "Chinese Lawyers · Case Handling Records", "Practical Trademark Guide", "Intellectual Property Strategy and Practice", "Protection of Intellectual Property Rights in Enterprises-Trademarks" and other professional books. He has accepted many interviews with newspapers and magazines such as China Invention & Patent, Famous Brand Times, China Intellectual Property News, Beijing News and other newspapers and magazines.

Mr. Zhao has been invited as a trademark expert by the Chinese Trademark Office to join the team for the third amendment to the trademark law and implementation regulations and participated in discussions on laws and regulations held by the State Intellectual Property Office many times. He also gave keynote speeches at large-scale seminars organized by international associations and government such as INTA, ECTA, FICPI and Chinese National Group of AIPPI, and systematically introduced China's intellectual property system.

Mr. Zhao is the member of many international associations including the European Union Trademark Owners Association (MARQUES), the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), International Trademark Association (INTA), European Communities Trademark Association (ECTA) and International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI). He is also a member of the All China Lawyers Association, the China Intellectual Property Society and the China Trademark Association (CTA).

Mr. Zhao is currently the co-chair of China Global Advisory Council (GAC) at the INTA Council Meeting. His professional duties include providing advices and suggestions to INTA Chairman and CEO, advocating for regional policy development or addressing hot issues, as well as promoting cross-industry exchanges and liaison.
