Sean Cummings is a patent, trade mark and design attorney with wide experience across the full range of IP disciplines, gained over many years in private practice.

Sean has substantial experience in trade mark and design matters, contentious proceedings, litigation support and as an expert witness. With a background in engineering, Sean has also applied his technical knowledge to patents in numerous fields.

After entering the IP profession in 1986, Sean joined the then-new firm of Keltie in 1989 and became one of the first Partners in the firm in 1993. Sean is also Director of the firm’s Irish subsidiary, which he founded in 2016. There, he has built a team working with clients ranging from spin-outs and start-ups to multinationals. In 2026, he was named by Managing IP as Practitioner of the Year among patent and trade mark attorney firms in Ireland.

Sean has appeared as an advocate before the UKIPO in patent, trade mark and design disputes and before EPO Examination Divisions, Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal. He holds a Diploma in IP Litigation from Birkbeck College, University of London. Developing his interest in dispute resolution, Sean was one of the first patent and trade mark attorneys to train as a mediator. He has since used that knowledge to guide clients through successful mediations.
