Vesna Tomljenovic

Ms Vesna Tomljenović was born in 1956 in Rijeka (Croatia); she graduated in law from the Sveučilište u Rijeci (University of Rijeka) in 1984, then was awarded an LLM in 1996 and a doctorate in law in 1996 from the Sveučilište u Zagrebu (University of Zagreb, Croatia). She was admitted to the Croatian Bar in 1982.

Between 2005 and 2013, she coordinated the specialised higher studies programme ‘Law of European Integration’ at the Sveučilište u Rijeci (University of Rijeka). Between 2005 and 2013, she was the Chair of International Law and Private European Law at that university. In 2003, she was a visiting professor at Tulane University Law School (United States) in the context of the Fullbright programme. She is a registered arbitrator with the Stalno arbitražno sudište Hrvatske gospodarske komore (Permanent Arbitration Court of the Chamber of Commerce, Croatia).

From 2005 to 2013 she headed the working group of the negotiation team for the Republic of Croatia, in charge of Chapter 28 of the acquis communautaire (Consumer and Health Protection). She has been the President of the Hrvatska udruga za poredbeno pravo (Croatian Comparative Law Association) since 2006.

Ms Tomljenović was appointed as a Judge at the General Court of the European Union on 4 July 2013. She was elected President of the Chamber by her peers on 21 September 2016 and 30 September 2019 and has acted in that capacity since then.
