19.00 - 03.00 | Gala Dinner at Handelsbeurs In the Middle Ages, the port of Antwerp became a crucial link in world trade. The city was home to thousands of merchants from all over Europe. In the course of the fifteenth century, they began to buy and sell not just goods, but shares of a ship’s cargo. Soon the wooden buildings where the transactions took place became too cramped, and the city decided to build a new, dedicated stock exchange just outside the gates – the first of its kind in the entire world, which served as a model for similar buildings in London, Amsterdam, and other European cities. The current neogothic building, inspired by the sixteenth-century original, was designed by Joseph Schadde (1872). After a long and intensive renovation the building complex of the Handelsbeurs, the adjacent Schippersbeurs (where traders and merchants negotiated the freighting of ships and skippers received their missions) and a connected housing block was reopened in October 2019. Dress Code: Cocktail attire The venue is in walking distance, no bus transfers will be provided. Guests should make their way to Handelsbeurs individually to arrive between 19.00 and 19.20. Address: Twaalfmaandenstraat 9, 2000 Antwerp From the Conference venue approx. 15 minutes on foot via De Keyserlei and Meir or by underground tram (pre-metro) to Antwerpen Meir station by - Tram 3 (direction Zwijndrecht P+R Melsele) or tram 5 (direction P+R Linkeroever) from Antwerpen Astrid station; - Tram 9 (direction P+R Linkeroever) or tram 15 (direction Regatta) from Antwerpen Diamant station.
